Mexican War
When Texas became part of the United States in 1845, Mexico disputed the border. After negotiations failed, fighting began. During the conflict, almost 80,000 American Soldiers fought in Mexico, capturing the capital in September 1847. The short war provided valuable combat experience to the young Army officers who would command the armies on both sides during the Civil War. It also introduced new ways of fighting such as the flying artillery.
