Preserving the Nation
The Civil War threatened to tear the nation apart over the issue of slavery. Eleven southern states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America to maintain what they viewed as an essential part of their economy. After four years of fighting that claimed more American lives than any other conflict in history, the United States Army prevailed and preserved the Union.
