Operation Eagle Claw - Iran
The failure of Operation Eagle Claw led to the development of improved joint services coordination and the creation of the U.S. Special Operations Command.
Operation Eagle Claw, the plan to rescue American embassy personnel held in Iran, drew forces from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. On the night of 24 April 1980, helicopters and C-130 aircraft landed at "Desert One," a salt flag inside Iran. When three of the mission's helicopters and C-130 aircraft landed at "Desert One," a salt flat inside Iran. When three of the mission's helicopters experienced mechanical failure, the raid was aborted. During departure a helicopter collided with a C-130, wrecking both aircraft and killing five airmen and three marines.
