Founding the Nation
The foundation of the American Army began when colonists formed militias. On 14 June 1775, the Continental Congress created an Army after war erupted between Great Britain and its thirteen North American colonies. In the War of 1812, the United States defended its rights as a sovereign nation. Throughout this period, Soldiers fought in numerous Indian wars, which expanded America's western frontier.
