The 48th US Volunteer Infantry, an African American regiment, carried this flag when it served in Luzon during the Philippine Insurrection. Its area of operations was mountainous and covered with thick vegetation, but within three months the regiment had pacified the area. The regimental commander, Col. William P. Duvall, later wrote that there was "no better soldier material to be found than that which abides, abounds, and flourishes in the American negro."
