The Corps of Engineers
On 16 June 1775, the Continental Congress resolved "That there by one Chief Engineer at the Grand Army."
Originally part of the artillery, the Army established a separate Corps of Engineers as a permanent branch of 16 March 1802. Initially responsible for founding the US Military Academy at West Point, the Corps of Engineers has been integral to the development of the country. During the 19th century, the Corps built coastal fortifications, surveyed roads and canals, and explored and mapped the western frontier. Today, the US Army Corps of Engineers continues to develop the nation's infrastructure.
