1973 All-Volunteer Army
With the end of the draft, the Army faces the challenge of recruiting an all-volunteer force. Because its authorized strength is reduced by about one half from its peak during Vietnam, the Army does not need as many Soldiers. To meet the required numbers, recruiters receive additional incentive pay. Bonuses for 32 of the most critical skills, including the combat arms, better pay for Soldiers, and opening more jobs to women all contribute to creating a high-quality volunteer Army.
