The Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American men, begin to train as pilots for the Army Air Forces in 1941; 450 of these aviators serve overseas. In February 1943, the 442d Regimental Combat Team, composed of Japanese American citizens, is formed. The unit compiles an impressive combat record.
