In the first part of the 20th century, women make gains in American society and the Army. The serve overseas during World War I and receive the right to vote at home. The Army drafts African Americans as it expands for the war, although they continue to serve in segregated units. The Great Depression drives unemployment to almost 25 percent in 1932 before government programs help increase employment opportunities.
