1890s
Onto the World's Stage
AS the 19th century draws to an end, the Army continues to patrol the American West. When the nation's Western frontier disappears and more than a century of wars with American Indians come to an end, the Army consolidates its forces into larger posts, abandoning many small forts across the West. In 1898, the War with Spain moves the nation onto the world's stage, prompting a dramatic increase in the size of the Army and generating a wave of patriotic support. |
