Immigration & Expansion:
During the first half of the 19th century, European immigration increases the population of the United States by more than 400 percent. The Louisiana Purchase and Mexican War open vast regions of the West to settlement. Pioneers move inland, displacing American Indians from traditional tribal lands. As a result, the Army is deployed as a buffer between settlers and Indians and is frequently called upon to displace and relocate reluctant tribes.
