Sgt. George Baker

George Baker (1915-1975) created the comic book character Sad Sack in June 1942 for Yank, the Army Weekly. Most of Sad Sack's misfortunes occured [sic] at the aptly named Camp Calamity. During World War II the character was portrayed on the radio by Mel Blanc, the well-known voice of the cartoon character Porky Pig. Sad Sack later became a comic strip, running in newspapers until 1957. Two books of Baker's Sad Sack cartoons were also published.
