Reclining Figure: Hand, Ed 8/9

This sculpture was a gift of the Henry Moore Foundation. The artist himself proposed this specific piece (letter to George Ivan Smith dated 19 March, 1980) as "representative work of mine." Henry Moore, dedicated the work to the memory of Dag Hammarskjold "because of my personal admiration for him and my feeling that all artists of this country would like to show their support of the wonderful work done by the United Nations to preserve the world for art and everything else."

Henry Moore was an English sculptor was born in 1898 and died in 1986. Moore was considered to be one of the preeminent sculptors of the 20th C. His abstract monumental sculptures are located throughout the world as public art works. His works generally depict the human figure, often in a reclining position. The Henry Moore Foundation, the Donor of the Gift, was established to promote the public appreciation of art and to preserve Moore's sculptures. It now runs Moore's final home, Hoglands, as a gallery and museum of Moore's workshops."
