The Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment, is an award established as per the directives of His Highness Sheikh Maktoun Bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai in response to the Dubai Declaration adopted buy the United Nations Conference on Best Practices held in Dubai during November 19-22, 1995. The Dubai Declaration was later adopted by the World Assembly of Cities and Local Authorities as well as the HABITAT II Conference held in Istanbul, Turkey in June, 1998. The first Dubai Award for Best Practices was presented by the UN Secretary-General and the Director-General of Dubai Municipality on June 4, 1996 at the Habitat II Conference in Istanbul to recipients from Argentina, Cote d'Ivoire, India, Morocco, The Netherlands and USA. The purpose is "To encourage, recognize and enhance awareness of outstanding and sustainable achievements in improving the quality of life in urban and rural settlements.The trophy is made in the shape of a wind-tower, known as "Barjil." in Arabic. The "Barjeel" was used as an air cooler and air purifier in traditional Arabic architecture before air-conditioners were invented. The Barjil is made of Copper and covered with Gold and the base of the Barjil is made of Industrial Marble.
