Replica of the Royal Thai Barge "Suphannahong"

The replica, one tenth the size of the actual royal barge, was carved out of a single trunk of teakwood following as far as was practicable the construction of the original. They used photogranametic techniques to determine the precise form and profile of the barge at one tenth of the actual size. This model is the first one that can be called an exact replica of the royal barge. The royal barge "Suphannahong" is known world-wide as a symbol of Thailand. Its graceful figurehead representing the golden hamsa the mythical swan is quite distinctive and is often seen in photographs and publications. The ornamentation was handcrafted resulting in a miniature version of the carvings on the original. on the original. Decorative materials such as lacquer glazed reflectors gold leaf and paint were applied and appear exactly as they are on the original. Measuring 44.9m long by 3.14m wide, it is decorated with intricate gilded carvings and multitiered "chatras" symbols of rank and fitted on ceremonial occasions with either a "Busabok Banlang" or a "Kanya Banlang". (The former is a spired throne used for carrying the King or a venerated Buddha image and the letter is a roofed pavilion used for group traveling.) Her full complement consists of 50 oarsmen, 2 steersmen, 2 officers, 1 ensign carrier, a chanter and a signaler all armed with swords.
