A wide-angle shot from the top of the pueblo looking down. The interesting land area on the right is a smelting pond, where remnants of mining operations were pumped. Between 1876 and 1953, chalcopyrite was mined in this area. It produced $375 million in copper, in addition to some silver, gold, and zinc. The ruins were owned by the mining company (the United Verde Company) which protected the site better than most in the area. Now, however, the mining company has finished up operations and they want to sell off the dumping ground. Current plans are to try to clean it up of some of its more toxic elements, dump some topsoil on it, and turn it into a golf course.
