The bunting-draped hotel at left replaced a "Hash Row" boarding house on the corner of Pennsylvania Ave. and 4 ½ St., approximately on this spot. Sen. Henry Clay, upper right, once boarded there. The United States Hotel, once one block east of here, advertised reasonable rates around 1880. |
