What Was the Layout of Topaz?
Topaz contained 42 blocks. Each block consisted of 12 barracks plus a central messhall, laundry/latrine/showers and recreation hall. Each barrack was divided into six "apartments" of various sizes. A typical apartment was 20' x 20' with a coal burning, pot-bellied stove for heat. Privacy was limited to one wall per apartment. There were no bathroom facilities or running water inside the barracks. |
