Guastavino's Monument
The Basilica of St. Lawrence boasts North America's largest freestanding elliptical dome, unsupported by wood or steel. Constructed of tile and mortar, it was assembled using an ancient Moorish technique perfected and patented by Rafael Guastivino. He collaborated with Richard Sharp Smith on the design of this church, which was completed in 1909.
