Railroading in the 1920s:
Railroading reached the peak of its importance in the 1920s, reflecting the industry's growth and technological improvements during the previous decades.
By 1920, 29 railroad lines served South Carolina, and the state had about 5,000 miles of track, a five-fold increase since 1860.
The major interstate lines were the Atlantic Coast Line, the Seaboard Air Line Railway, and the Southern Railway. In addition to freight service, they also ran fast luxury passenger trains for long-distance travel.
Locally owned and operated short-line trains carried a few cars of passengers and freight from one town to another and from rural areas into town. Branch lines connected them with major lines.
