Pac-Man
1980
Toru Iwatani

Pac-Man was the first game to achieve widespread popularity, appealing to women as well as men and to both serious and casual gamers. Designer Toru Iwatani was inspired by a children's story about a creature that eats children to protect them from monsters. Pac-Man's shape is derived from the character for mouth, or kuchi. This classic game introduced the "maze and chase" genre at a time when video arcade games were dominated by space shooters.
