George Washington, 1732-1799
James and Ellen Sharples came to the United States from Bath, England, in the early 1790s. By 1796, while in Philadelphia, James had created two life portraits in pastel of George Washington, once a profile and one a three-quarter view of the president in uniform. Both Ellen and James also made copies of his portraits of Washington and other notable Americans. In 1803, having returned to England, Ellen Sharples noted in her diary that she had created two miniatures of Washington. One of these is now in the collection of the Bristol Art Museum; this may be the second.
