Hans Hofmann, 1880-1966
In 1935, the painter Hans Hofmann, who had recently immigrated to the United States from Germany, established a summer art school in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It was there that the photographer Bill Witt took this photograph during a "Friday Critique." As an essential part of the curriculum, Hofmann would bring together students to discuss their works in detail. The school empha- sized studio practice, and students spent much of their time working from models and still lifes. For Hofmann, an artist excelled only when she or he had a complete sense of her or his chosen craft, including the history of its medium.
