Grand Reception of the Notabilities of the Nation at the White House, 1865
This scene depicts a grand reception at the White House on the evening of Lincoln's second inauguration, March 4, 1865. Some five to six thousand people, including the public, attended and shook hands with the president. General Ulysses S. Grant, recognizable behind the woman shaking hands with Lincoln, was not actually in attendance.
