One person's mascot...
Where some people see cherished traditions, others see racist stereotypes.

Resistance:
During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, save Native Americans began calling for an end to the use of stereotypical names and images of Native people as sports mascots. Over the years, many teams have compiled. But strong resistance remains toward relinquishing some long-held names and mascots.

The Fighting Whites:
Solomon Little Owl and other members of a University of Northern Colorado intramural basketball team -- made up on Native Americans, Latinos and whites -- created this team name and mascot after failing to persuade a nearby high school to change its logo, an unflattering caricature of an Indian, and its team name, the Fightin' Reds.
