Finding Fossils in Coal Mines

Much of the coal we burn today formed millions of years ago from fallen trees and plants in swampy Carboniferous forests. Today, hundreds of feet underground, the tunnels of coal mines allow access to these ancient forests.

Deep in the mines, scientists learn what the forest actually looked like. By studying plants that show climate changes in ancient climates, they uncover clues about how climate may change impacting ecosystems today and into the future.
