Extinction in South America

Large animal species went extinct after humans arrived, as on other continents, but the evidence linking extinctions to humans or climate is unclear here.

Humans arrived in South America around 15,000 years ago. The fossil record shows that many South American species went extinct more than 8,000 years later, and 1,000 years after the climate got significantly warmer. The gap between these changes and widespread extinction is still under investigation.
