"None of us, the essential workers, are heroes. We are hostages. I and my coworkers are finding that everyone has become a heightened version of themselves in light of this pandemic. Are you usually anxious? Now you're a nervous wreck. Are you usually kind? Now you're especially lovely, and always seem to have something nice to say. Are you usually a little shady, rude, or racist? Now you're our worst nightmare. Everyone's true colours are showing, and the saddest thing is to find out who are the "We're all going to die eventually, so who cares when?" people. It is already so difficult to get up every day knowing that my only two choices are to risk death by Covid-19 or risk death by starvation and homelessness, and it wrecks me to be surrounded by people who shrug their shoulders and tell me "That's a choice *YOU* have to make, so stop complaining once you pick one."
