Fragments of the Airship Hindenburg
1937
Built by the German Zeppelin Company and billed as the largest and safest airship yet constructed, the Hindenburg began regular passenger service across the North Atlantic in 1936. Filled with hydrogen, it burst into flame and was destroyed on May 6, 1937. This disaster, claiming 35 lives, marked the end of the era of the giant rigid airships.
