The Big Guns
1891-1950
This era of coast defense consisted of large steel rifled cannons bolted to concrete batteries. Mounted on both sides of the Golden Gate, these very accurate guns could fire far out to sea. They defended the bay during World War II, but air power and amphibious landing craft soon made them obsolete. |
