Trinity test
White Sands Proving Ground, 1945
At 5:29am local time on July 16, 1945, the test device was detonated. The force of the world's first nuclear explosion was roughly equivalent to that of 20,000 tons of TNT. A mushroom-shaped cloud of fire and smoke reached an altitude of almost eight miles. Light from the explosion was visible as far away as 250 miles.
