In time, bookplates were also issued by institutions, often religious ones, awarding books to individuals to recognize academic performance, or good behavior. These would be inscribed by hand with the name of the individual. Such plates could be very elaborate, or very simple in their design, reflecting the character of the awarding institution. It also became very common for institutions such as schools and public libraries to adopt their own personalized bookplate for their collections.
