In 1984, the San Diego Public Library's collection of bookplates -- numbering around 300 -- received a tremendous boost. James H. Wilkinson, a member of the American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers, passed away leaving his collection of 6,700 bookplates to the library's Wangenheim Room. Mr. Wilkerson had requested that the donation be given in memory of his grandfather, James Daniel Humphrey. This gift spurred the subsequent donation of over 1,300 bookplates from another generous donor, resulting in San Diego Public Library owning one of the largest library-owned collections in the country.
