The origin of the Bookplate dates to mid- to late 15th century Germany, just after Gutenberg's creation of the mechanical printing press. But it was not until the 18th century that the engraving of bookplates entered its golden age; this was reflected in the craftsmanship of bookplates made by the processes of copper and steel engraving, aquatint, mezzotint, lithography, and wood engraving.
