The last Justice appointed without having attended law school was Justice James Byrnes in 1941. He was self-taught, having read law on his own from 1896 to 1903.

Among the best known law professors of the 20th century was Felix Frankfurter. Prior to joining the Court, he inspired many future lawyers, even recommending graduates to Justices for clerkships.
