In 1880, Lockwood demonstrated her expansive support of equal rights by moving the admission of Samuel Lowery, an African American attorney from Alabama, to the Supreme Court Bar. Lowery became the first African American attorney from a southern state to be admitted. In this illustration from Frank Leslie's Newspaper, Lockwood is shown near Lowery before the Bench in the Courtroom in the U.S. Capitol Building.
