Belva Lockwood's first attempt at admission to the Supreme Court Bar was denied due to the gender in October 1876, when the Court was led by Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite. Lockwood was admitted three years later, after successfully petitioning Congress to pass a law allowing qualified women into the Supreme Court Bar. |
