Belva Lockwood's 1879 Supreme Court Bar Certificate, reproduced here, allowed her to argue before the highest court in the land. She argued two cases before the Supreme Court. The first, Kaiser v. Stickney (1880), concerned a married woman's debt. The second, United States v. Cherokee Nation (1906), was argued over the course of two days and won her clients a multi-million dollar award, one of the largest payments to a Native American tribe for land ceded to the U.S. government.
