The Court's Second Home: Independence Hall
After spending the 1790 Term at the Merchant's Exchange Building in New York City, the Court followed the Federal Government as it relocated to Philadelphia. On February 7-8, 1791, the Justices met at the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall. The Justices shared a courtroom used by other local courts, situated on the ground floor of the building's west side. Although the Court subsequently moved to Philadelphia's City Hall, they met once more in Independence Hall on August 5, 1796.
This model of Independence Hall was created by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and presented to the Court as part of the Constitution Day celebrations at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1937.
