While walking home from a party in May 2010, 16-year-old Kalief Browder and a friend were stopped by police officers responding to a 911 call. The officers wrongfully arrested Browder for allegedly stealing a backpack. Kalief would spend the next three years imprisoned on Rikers Island, a maximum-security prison, including two years solitary confinement. His trial never came. Released from prison in 2013, on the grounds of lack of evidence, Browder returned home to the Bronx. On June 6, 2015, at his home in the Bronx, Kalief Browder hanged himself, a method of suicide he was exposed to while wrongfully imprisoned.
