America incarcerates Black people at far higher rates than any other racial group. Black people are 40% of America's prison population, but just 13.4% of the total U.S. population. Conversely, white Americans are 39% of the prison population but 64% of the U.S. population. One out of four Black boys born today can expect to go to prison in his lifetime compared to one out of every 17 white boys. Black people are also subject to pretrial detention at a higher rate than white arrestees with similar charges and criminal history.
