In 1897 he tried to corner the wheat market. With the collapse of the market in 1898 he lost over $10,000,000 of his family's fortune. He and his father, Levi Zeigler Leiter, purchased land in Franklin County, Illinois, and founded Zeigler Coal Company. Built the town of Zeigler and the first hospital in Franklin County. Headed the Illinois Coal Company, president of Zeigler Coal Company, Zeigler & Gulf Railway and the Washington Gas Company.
