Bird's Eye View:

"Wilmington .. a first-class city in every respect."
-- Richard Edwards, Editor & Publisher, Industries of Delaware, Historical and Descriptive Review, 1880
This view of Wilmington, published in 1864 and reprinted in 1986, is one of the City's great treasures. Labeled below are many important landmarks and manufacturing facilities of that time.
River traffic includes one- and two-masted schooners, sidewheeler steamboats, the schooner-rigged steamboat Wilmington, several small sailboats, river rafts, a tugboat and a monitor-type battleship.
Numerous banks, hotels, leather factories, and machine shops were thriving. How many Union flags can you count flying in this Civil War era town?
