Five days after the Marines landed on Iwo Jima, on February 23, 1945, Joe Rosenthal captured the most iconic image of the battle. The photograph captured five Marines and one US Navy corpsman raising a second flag at the summit of Mount Suribachi. Although the first flag was raised earlier in the day, it was replaced with a larger flag in the afternoon. |
