On April 18, 1912, the RMS Carpathia arrived on this pier with 710 survivors of the RMS Titanic, which had sunk in the Atlantic Ocean three days before.

On May 1, 1915, the RMS Lusitania departed from this pier on her 202nd Atlantic Ocean crossing. She was sunk by torpedo 11 miles off the coast of Ireland six days later.

This is in remembrance of the more than 1,500 people who perished on the RMS Titanic, and to the more than 1,198 people who lost their lives on the RMS Lusitania.
