Organized Resistance Collapses:
By 10 April just three days after the second thunder run, organized resistance in Baghdad collapsed together with Saddam Hussein's government. US forces also began to move into northern Iraq. The 173nd Airborne Brigade, which included one tank and one mechanized infantry company, used its air mobility to enter northern Iraq. there the brigade conducted operations in conjunction with Special Forces operatives and Kurdish fighters, seizing Mosul and Kirkuk. South of Baghdad, the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment assumed responsibility for securing lines of communication to and from Baghdad. Additional forces moved west to the capital toward the Syrian border, while the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the 4th Infantry Division prepared to enter Iraq. With the war apparently ending, operations shifted to stability and support. On 1 May [2003!], President Bush declared major combat operations ended, although some Ba'athist party loyalists were expected to continue resistance.
