US Armor Training in Germany:
Inside the Federal Republic of Germany, armored units conducted training on military complexes that once supported the German Wehrmacht, such as Hohenfels, Grafenwohr, and Vilseck. The threat posed by the nearby presence of Warsaw Pact forces ensured continuous attention to maintenance, training, and overall combat readiness. Units might be called to respond to an invasion at any time, regardless of weather. Training reflected this reality, despite the hardship this sometimes imposed on soldiers. For cavalry units, regular border patrols offered the constant possibility of direct contact in some form with East German security.
