Mechanized and Armored Combat Operations in Vietnam (MACOV):
The employment of armor to Vietnam proposed doctrinal and training challenges for mounted units. The operational environment of Vietnam differed dramatically from the Central Europe setting and Warsaw Pact threat on which armored doctrine was based. To determine more effective means of employing armor in a counterinsurgency role, the Army undertook a study of mounted operations in Vietnam. This work, known as the Mechanized and Armored Combat Operations in Vietnam (MACOV) study, was completed in 1966-1967. It drew on the experiences of the US Army, Marine Corps, and South Vietnamese mechanized infantry, cavalry, and tank units. The final result was an exhaustive analysis that served as a tactical guidebook for the use of armor in counterinsurgency operations.
