Counter-Ambush Tactics:
Sudden ambush by RPGs, mortars, and small arms, became a common experience in Vietnam. Armor and cavalry units therefore developed battle drills to shape their response to such attacks. Generally, vehicles were instructed to drive through an ambush while returning fire against suspected enemy positions. Once clear of the immediate ambush, the column regrouped and counterattacked, relying on its armor, firepower, and simple aggressiveness to overrun the ambushers. In some cases, helicopters or mortar support were also used to suppress and destroy hostile forces. If time and circumstances permitted, a flanking move was undertaken to prevent the ambushing forces from escaping. In every case, however, armored units were encouraged to attack and maintain contact with an otherwise elusive enemy. Maneuver and firepower were then exploited to eliminate the erstwhile attackers. |
