Assault Gun Mark III Model G
This vehicle was recovered in 1994 from the bottom of a bog south of present day St. Petersburg Russia where it had broken through the ice in January of 1944. The vehicle had been participating in a local German counterattack against Soviet forces when it unknowingly crossed an open bog and bottomed out. Unable to recover the vehicle immediately, the crew took the radios, small arms and personal equipment. The area was overrun and the vehicle was never recovered. Soviet attempts to recover the vehicle after the war proved fruitless and no other attempts were made until the spring of 1994. It was recovered with a full ammunition load -- which was retained and, for safety, destroyed by the new Russian government. It was exchanged to the US Army in 1995.
